Reporting Verbs
Reporting verbs are used to report what someone said more accurately than using say or tell.

Here are the six cases of their use:

Case 1:
Form: verb + infinitiveVerbs: agree (согласиться), decide (решить), offer (предложить), promise (пообещать), refuse (отказаться), threaten (угрожать)
For example:
  • They agreed to meet on Friday.
  • He refused to tell what was wrong.

Case 2:
Form: verb + object + infinitiveVerbs: advise (советовать), encourage (поощрять), invite (приглашать), remind (напоминать), warn (предупреждать)
For example:
  • Steve advised me to go home early.
  • Alice reminded me to telephone my mother.

Case 3:
Form: verb + gerundVerbs: deny(отрицать), recommend (рекомендовать), suggest (предлагать)
  • They recommended taking the bus.
  • Elisa suggested meeting a little earlier.

Case 4:
Form: verb + object + prepositionVerbs: accuse (обвинять), blame (винить), congratulate (поздравлять) For example:
  • The police accused the criminal of taking the money.
  • They congratulated me on getting a new job.

Case 5:
Form: verb + preposition + gerundVerbs: apologize (извиняться), insist (настаивать)
For example:
  • They apologized for not coming.
  • He insisted on having dinner.

Case 6:
Form: verb + subject + verbVerbs: admit, agree, decide, deny, explain, insist, promise, recommend, suggest(признать) (согласиться) (решить) (отрицать) (объяснить) (настаивать) (обещать) (рекомендовать) (предлагать)
For example:
  • Alice decided (that) the house needed cleaning.
  • They recommended (that) we take the bus.
